We all experience storms in our life that we don’t prefer. Yet, it’s all part of life, right? Things happen, but there is always a lesson for us, if we’re willing.
We hear forecasts of bad weather coming in. Some prepare, some choose not to.
This got me thinking… it’s how life works. It’s a simple metaphor, and it feels honest: Life gives us forecasts too. We just tend to ignore them longer.
Those forecasts often show up as gray areas, you know, the places where nothing is “wrong,” but nothing feels fully right either.
This has become my life’s work. I want to end the dullness and coasting many of us experience in our lives. You deserve better than just settling while ignoring the truth. Hence why this newsletter exists.
Let’s talk about 5 signs you might be living in a gray area, even if your life looks successful on paper.

5 Signs You’re in a Gray Area
1) Other people are noticing before you are. A spouse, friend, or colleague has mentioned your drinking, stress, mood, or energy more than once. You brushed it off, but the comment lingered. (I call these “seeds” just waiting to be watered.)
2) Your energy is fine, but your joy feels muted. You’re functioning, productive, and responsible, but that deep, grounded sense of peace or excitement feels distant.
3) Brain fog is becoming your baseline. Focus takes more effort. You forget small things. You’re still sharp, but not as sharp as you know you can be.
4) You’re buffering more than you realize. Alcohol, scrolling, overworking, or distractions help you avoid stillness, hard conversations, or uncomfortable thoughts.
5) You keep thinking, “I should probably change this… but later.” The thought returns. The timing never feels right. Gray areas thrive on delay.
These aren’t red flags. They’re yellow lights. They’re the forecast before the storm.
In my DECIDE method, the first step is Desire. Not discipline. Not hacks. Just the honest moment you admit: “I don’t want this to be normal anymore.”
Nothing changes without that desire. Everything changes after it.
(I’ll share the other five signs on my new podcast, Beyond the Gray with Kari, launching mid-February.)
Your Next Move
Instead of trying to fix everything, pick one of the signs above and get honest with it.
Ask yourself:
- If this stayed the same for five more years, how would I feel about that?
- What would this quietly cost me in my health, relationships, or leadership?
You don’t need a full plan yet. Awareness is the first act of leadership. Preparation starts with noticing the forecast first.
Curated Resource
I keep coming back to a line from Andy Stanley’s Better Decisions, Fewer Regrets book: “Direction, not intention, determines destination.”
Gray areas feel neutral, but they’re also directional. Small, tolerated habits quietly steer your life somewhere (whether you’re paying attention or not!). They’re also a choice… that’s the good news.
What I’m Loving
Storm days slow everything down. Forced stillness has a way of revealing what we’ve been avoiding and what actually matters. Even five minutes without a phone can bring surprising clarity.
I recently heard the phrase, “Taking an electronic Sabbath”. I love that! I encourage you to try it… and not just on Sundays.
What’s Next
I’m unpacking all ten gray area signals, (and how to move out of them), on the Beyond the Gray with Kari podcast, launching mid-February. If any of these signs felt familiar, those conversations are for you.
If you’re nodding your head to one or more of the signs listed, let this be your nudge to look more closely at your gray areas. If you’re ready to do something about them, now is the time to schedule a FREE DISCOVERY CALL.
