Let me start with something you might be thinking but haven’t been able to say out loud in fear that you’ll have to actually do something about it. Your gray area drinking is doing its job. You may also be saying:
“I’m not that bad… but I also know this isn’t who I want to be anymore.”
If that landed, keep reading.
Because here’s what I’ve learned working with hundreds of high-performing people over 50: some of the most successful people I know are the ones who feel the most confused.
Not because their life is falling apart. But because it looks SO good on the outside… and still doesn’t feel right on the inside. Sound familiar?
That was me to a “T” years ago that left me in multiple gray areas: My drinking, my health, my marriage and my spirituality. The drinking was the one that took the pole position, and was the easiest to identify. So let’s start there in today’s edition of The Weekly Tonic.
What is Gray Area Drinking?
Gray area drinking isn’t alcoholism. It’s that space where you’re still crushing it at work, showing up for your family, making things happen… but you’re also:
- Drinking more nights than not
- Waking up feeling less than stellar
- Noticing your patience is thinner
- Feeling disconnected from your marriage (not horrible, just not filled with intimacy or excitement)
- Wondering why your energy isn’t what it used to be
And here’s the kicker: your body after 50 doesn’t process alcohol the same way. What used to feel like a reward now multiplies fatigue, anxiety, inflammation, and that middle-of-the-night wide-awake feeling. I call that the 3 AM panic.
It’s Not About the Alcohol – It’s How Gray Area Drinking is Doing its Job
Most people don’t drink because they love alcohol. They drink because they love what alcohol does. I want to say that again to be sure it lands.
Most people don’t drink because they LOVE alcohol. They drink because they love what IT DOES. It’s doing a job. And it works.
It takes the edge off. It quiets the noise. It gives you an off switch.
But for gray area drinkers, alcohol isn’t the real issue. It’s the tool you’re using to escape internal discomfort. Stress. Pressure. Boredom. Loneliness. That nagging feeling that you’ve built a great life… and still don’t feel happy.
And nobody wants to admit that out loud. But we can’t just put alcohol in this category. We can use any outlet such as emotionally eating, scrolling on social media, gaming, or fill- in-the-blank-distraction you’re doing to escape discomfort.
It’s ALL the same.
Why Moderation Feels Like a Full-Time Job
If you’ve tried moderating, you know: it’s exhausting! Because moderation means you’re constantly negotiating with yourself.
Should I drink tonight? How much is too much? Should I drink tomorrow?
You’re making decisions all day long. At night, your brain doesn’t want discipline. It wants relief.
So you do what works. And then the next morning: “Dang it. Not again.”
That’s not a willpower issue. That’s a pattern issue. And the good news? Patterns can be interrupted with the right plan and accountability.
Your Next Move
Here’s something you can do right now. Rate these four areas, 1 to 10:
- BODY – Health, energy, sleep, recovery
- BEING – Peace, faith, connection to yourself
- BALANCE – Marriage, relationships, presence
- BUSINESS – Purpose, drive, legacy
Which one feels “off”… but you’ve been avoiding it?
That’s usually where the drinking is doing its job.
The Truth You Cannot Avoid
If alcohol is still in your life, it’s solving something.
And if you want to change the behavior, you don’t start by fighting the alcohol, or the behavior you’re questioning.
You start by asking: “What am I trying to escape?”
That answer is where your freedom begins.
If this hit home, I created something free called the Gray Area Audit. It takes 15 minutes and will show you exactly where you’re living in the gray and what it’s costing you.
All you need to do is CLICK HERE and download the audit to get started.
You don’t need rock bottom to make a change. You just need honesty.
More clarity coming your way.
There is so much waiting for you beyond the gray. Gray area drinking is doing its job, but you get to decide whether or not you wish it to continue.
